Our Homeschool Curriculum for 2017 – 2018: Kindergarten

Around January of last year, my oldest daughter wrapped up Blossom and Root Early Years Vol. 2 and moved into Blossom and Root Kindergarten. We’ve been going at a pretty leisurely pace for the past seven months, adding in supplementary projects with Brave Writer’s Jot It Down program and following our curiosity with several child-led investigations. We’ve made it about halfway through so far.

For me, homeschool has never been a “start in September, end in May” deal. We start when it’s time, take breaks when we want, and follow our own flow. We’ll be continuing Blossom and Root Kindergarten, probably wrapping up just in time for the holidays. So far, we’ve enjoyed it immensely. This complete curriculum includes weekly:

  • Picture Study (one picture per week by Monet, Picasso, Diego Rivera, and Edward Hopper)
  • Composer Study (listening to music by Bach, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, and Scott Joplin)
  • Artistic Expression (process-focused projects inspired by the week’s picture study)
  • History and Geography (focusing from the inside-out, first on ourselves and our family and then moving outward to local and world heroes)
  • Integrated Math and Science (a unique, hands-on, dramatic-play style exploration through numbers, patterns, shapes, and astronomy)
  • Nature Study and Nature Journal (living books-inspired explorations into the world around us, with The Burgess Animal Book for Children and Seed Babies being the two spines)
  • Read-alouds, narrations, journaling, and early reading activities rooted in beautiful children’s literature such as Stone Soup, Frog and Toad, Aesop’s Fables, My Father’s Dragon, Winnie the Pooh, and more

In keeping with the Charlotte Mason philosophy, which was a big inspiration while creating this curriculum, the lessons in Blossom and Root Kindergarten are short and sweet. Most days require only an hour (or less) of time to complete them together and leave plenty of time for open-ended play and outdoor activities. We will once again be incorporating the Brave Writer lifestyle into our homeschool with poetry tea parties, movies, big juicy conversations, and (for Blake) Jot it Down projects. (You can read about how we will be incorporating Brave Writer by clicking here.) We also like to add a heaping spoonful of integrated nature study (inspired by books we read together) and curiosity-inspired nature study (prompted by open-ended exploration outdoors.)

Blake showed more interest in math than I was anticipating, and began asking me to do more. Blossom and Root Kindergarten’s math is pretty gentle, so I decided to incorporate Singapore Math. We finished the Essential A book in about three months, but Essential B is definitely more difficult, so we take our time and incorporate lots of manipulative play when needed to reinforce the concepts. She’s really enjoying it, and I really like the way Singapore Math is set up.

Between the Blossom and Root curriculum, our additional nature study, Brave Writer projects and activities, and Singapore Math, we spend around two hours a day, five days a week on homeschool.

We are part-time homeschoolers. My daughters both currently attend my mom’s preschool part-time while my husband and I work. Homeschool happens around our work schedule, which is pretty flexible, often with the bulk of it happening Friday thru Sunday. This fall, Blake will be leaving the preschool and attending a half-day program at a local classical academy charter school. We will continue doing homeschool, focusing especially on reading aloud together, art and music, nature study, and the Brave Writer lifestyle.

What are you doing for kindergarten in your homeschool program? I would love to hear, so please share in the comments section! I hope everyone has a wonderful homeschool year!
